My Visit to Petra, Jordan on August 1, 2005

"There's no place quite like it on the earth"

On Monday, August 1, 2005 Cory Erickson and I walked through Petra in southern Jordan.
I'd like to share the sights and history through my photos below.

The renowned Treasury

Petra is located about 140 miles south of the capital Amman

One mode of transport

Gassing up halfway down

Bedouins everywhere

We liked THESE accommodations at Petra -- I kept my key just in case I needed it in the future.  I highly recommend the Crown Plaza -- info below.  Alternative housing (on right) was not as inviting

The late King Hussein's and son King Abdullah's image is everywhere

Cory Erickson -- we entered up the Siq area by horse

From the Visitor's Centre to the Siq

In the narrow Siq

Amphitheater capable of seating 7000 people

Cory buys souvenirs right next to the High Place altar

At rest stop Cory conversed in Arabic with the woman selling drinks

The Bedouin culture is alive and well

Bedouin girl who followed us on part of our walk

Close up and personal

The terrain from Amman to Petra is most inhospitable

The entry fee currently $35 for a day visit

Visitors from Saudi Arabia

Spectacular rock formations

Climbing towards the High Place

View from the High Place of carved mountain-- closer up below
