January 1999 Dental/Medical Mission to Ukraine

July 12, 1998

A combination dental and medical humanitarian trip to the Transcarpathian Region of Ukraine is being planned January 6-20, 1999. This mission has come about because of a desire to continue and expand the aid being given to the Sabbatarian community as well as the rest of the community in that Region.  The team is to composed of 20 - 30 doctors.

Upon having Dr. Maria Rivis, Sabbatarian Orthodontist from Khust visit his office, (click here to read more) Dr. Robert Silverman of Cleona, PA, expressed a desire to put together a team of dentists, doctors, and other professionals and go to Khust to do dental and medical procedures at no cost to the patients. Dr. Silverman has led such teams all around the world into many different countries. Both sets of Dr. Silverman's grandparents immigrated from Ukraine but he has not had the opportunity to visit Ukraine.

He initially contributed chairs, X-ray machines, eye glasses, plus many more supplies to the shipment that was sent to Khust last year (click here to read more) to establish a dental clinic at Mission Nazareth, which is run by the Sabbatarians in Khust. They had requested Victor Kubik's help in establishing that clinic. Dr. Silverman plans to take his portable equipment out to remote areas where the people do not have the chance to have their dental needs taken care of. The dentists and doctors who go on this trip will also be participating in a conference and giving lectures to the dentists and doctors in the Transcarpathian Region. This will be arranged by Dr. Rivis. Each participant of the team pays for all their own expenses incurred by the trip. chust1.gif (9661 bytes)

Sue Johns and Nancy Stephens, who traveled to Khust last September will also be a part of this team helping in the dental clinic, and assisting the team in any way they can.

Victor Kubik will be making arrangements in Khust for the team's arrival and will be kept very busy translating while the team is in Ukraine.

The team will be sending dental and medical supplies including medications on the next container shipment from Minnesota to Khust, scheduled to be shipped in August. This shipment will arrive in Khust in November- ready for the team's arrival in January. If anyone has any medical/dental supplies or medications (particulary antibiotics) they would like to contribute, please contact Sue Johns at: sljjwj2@aol.com or phone 717-626-0612 or fax 717-626-6618.

All help will be greatly appreciated.
